This “Tirotiro Tool” has been prepared over time in following wānanga of Te Warahi Hetaraka, Rereata Makiha and applying the māramataka principles into the work of Aki Tai Here, which evolved through the inquiry leadership of Te Kaurinui Parata.
Many contributions have made this possible including:
Kaitiaki teams wānanga trials with Ngā Tīrairaka o Ngāti Hine, Patuharakeke Te Iwi Trust Taiao Team and Ngātiwai Kauri Ora rangers
Pilot Project 2023/24 led by Weed Action Native Habitat Restoration Trust to build local mātauranga collaborations for native habitat restorations learn more here
This tool is free access with the option to store the data in your own ArcGIS account OR for our Aki Tai Here Team to support you to explore the information shared for your areas.
Due to extreme alienation from lands, language and culture, we will prioritise those with whakapapa to the places when any decisions need to be made about the data collected.
Tirotiro Tool
Introducing the Tirotiro tool available through Aki Tai Here for collecting observations, sightings and tohu in the taiao from a te ao Māori perspective. Through local mātauranga developed over centuries and handed down from generation to generation our hau kāinga are the ultimate source of māramataka information.
This tool does not seek to replace hau kāinga and local mātauranga, rather, encourage those spending time in the environment to initiate their own ‘tirotiro’ observations in our changing and uncertain climate future.
Te Kaupeka nō Ngāti Hine and Te Tau Toru Nui o Matariki lunar calendars can be referred to as learning tools. Feel free to look up the references below to familiarise yourself with these lunar phases.
Hui to explore the Maramataka information gathered can be arranged by contacting tari@akitaihere.org
Te Reo Māori features in both the Tirotiro tool mobile app, and supporting resources.
